| Name: | Li Shang |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1985-04-20 |
Character Information:
Fandom: Mulan
Name: Li Shang
Character Model: Nicholas Tse
Age: 21
Current Residence: China Town
Occupation: Patrol Officer / Part-time student at Balamb (Criminal Justice major), sophomore
Personality: Shang strives to be a model son for his very traditional family: respectful, strong, honorable. He’s a straight-laced kind of guy with a slight case of hero-worship where his father is concerned. He’s a tad reserved, but that’s only fitting for a ‘warrior,’ and generally does things by-the-book. He treats everyone short of criminals with kindness and respect, though he seems to have trouble with any kind of intimacy. After all, a man has to be an island, a rock, steady, strong, and independent. He more than occasionally ruins this stoic impression by being overtly excited over something, and while he would be serious by anyone else’s standards his family thinks of him as being overly emotional.
In spite of his straight-laced upbringing, Shang is a little more open-minded than the rest of his family. He’s tolerant of new ideas, even if they don’t sink in right away. It stems from having taken the ‘respect’ value to heart more than his grandmother probably intended; he figures anyone not breaking the law has the right to live in their own way. Even if it isn’t ‘right’ as he knows it. Despite this tolerance, no one can change his mind on what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ as far as law or morals go.
Biography: Shang had a rather normal childhood growing up in the China Town district of Twilight City. He lived with his parents and paternal grandparents in a small house and was home schooled by his grandmother. His father was an officer on the police force, and later a detective. Shang grew up on the stories his father would tell about his job, and with the expectation that he would follow his father’s career when he grew older.
He started young, and when he was middle and high school aged would ‘patrol’ the neighborhood. Like a hall monitor without a hall, since he was home schooled. He also took to following his father around work, learning the ‘trade’ as it were. He would often get in trouble for ‘catching’ petty criminals when he really had no right to do anything but call 911, but since he knew most of the police force by name it never amounted to anything.
Shang didn’t take his (GED) test until he was 19, at which point he was officially ‘graduated’ from school. He could have done it earlier, but his grandmother was convinced that he spent so much time on the street that he’d never pass and kept putting it off and requiring more study; he passed with flying colors. He entered Balamb University and started working toward a Criminal Justice degree, but took a hiatus from that to attend the police academy as soon as he turned 21. Now finishing his education has taken a back seat to performing the job he knows he was always meant to do, even though he knows he’ll need the degree to get any kind of decent promotion.
